SETTING THE STAGE FOR THINGS TO COME...

The Utah Grenadier Owners Club is excited to announce a professional Trail Leader Certification Training session hosted by Mike Reed with INEOS Events USA in Fruita, Colorado (~4 hour drive from SLC).

As our community grows and novice drivers join us on the trails, it is critical that we have qualified leaders at the front and tail of every convoy to ensure a safe, professional, and consistent experience for all members of all experience levels. This event is limited to 10 trucks, so register early and prepare to hone those skills! Basic knowledge of your Grenadier is recommended, but all experience levels welcome. Note: While on the trail, we will take five trucks, so attendees with double-up and alternate drivers.

WHERE TO STAY

CERTIFICATION & TRAINING OBJECTIVE

Participants will work toward their Provisional Trail Leader Certification, following the standards of the North American Off-Highway Vehicle Association (NAOHVA). This program establishes a repeatable system for risk mitigation and professional group leadership.

CORE COMPETENCY AREAS

  • Pre-run planning: validating trails, identifying obstacles, and fuel estimation.
  • Driver & Vehicle Assessment: Evaluate driver skill and vehicle capability.
  • Convoy Management: Lead, group, tail gunner. Maintain spacing and control.
  • Communication Protocols: GMRS radio with standard calls enforced.
  • On-Trail Leadership: Control pace, provide spotting, manage safety.
  • Recovery Management: Safe recovery practices and scene control.
  • Incident Response: Mechanical, medical, rollover procedures.
  • Environmental Compliance: Stay on trail and follow land use rules.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Candidates will be evaluated on their leadership, technical skill, and judgment. Please note that unsafe practices, poor communication, or loss of group control are automatic disqualifiers for certification.
